USA 1995 Republic of Palau Independence Issue Plate Block of 4 Postage Stamps, MNH
The Postal Service issued these 32-cent Republic of Palau commemorative stamps on September 29, 1995 in Agana, Guam. Also known as Belau, Palau is a group of 200 islands in the Western Pacific with a total land area of 188 square miles spread over 400 miles of ocean. Its neighbors include the Philippines to the west, Yap Island in the Federated States of Micronesia to the northeast, and the Irian Jaya province of Indonesia to the south.
In 1947, Palau became a part of the United Nations Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, under United States administration. The islands remained a Trust Territory until gaining independence on October 1, 1994, thus becoming the Republic of Palau.
